Points of Interest: Walls Lookout

Walls Lookout is a real gem and, considering the vista, it is amazingly easy to get to. Despite this, it's located on the quiet northern side of the Grose Valley and receives only a handful of daily visitors, unlike the honeypots at Govetts Leap and the Three Sisters.

There is a modest parking area located off Bells Line of Road which also serves Pierces Pass as well as Walls Lookout. The odd name for the road is derived from the road's original route as surveyed by Archibald Bell - Bell's Line. The route was shown to Bell by Indigenous Darug men Emery and Cogy in 1823 and was part of the traditional Aboriginal pathway network. After Bell marked the route, it was cleared and became the second road across the Blue Mountains.

From the parking area, it's only 2km along an easy path to the lookout, first passing through the bush before it opens up approaching the cliffs.

Unlike the lookouts around Katoomba, Walls Lookout is not a purpose-built platform so there are no fences or railings. The cliff edges can feel intimidating and a fall would be fatal so care should be taken if exploring the area. The height of the cliffs means the views are sensational taking in much of the Grose Valley and the entire length of the Blackheath Walls.

Immediately to the right of Walls Lookout is the imposing Rigby Hill, crowning an enormous cliff above the incision of Hungerfords Gully. If the conditions are right, a tall waterfall may flow from the gully's end. You'll get the best views of Rigby Hill from a more westerly point of Walls Lookout.

After wandering around the lookout for a bit I decided it was time to head back towards the car, checking out the Pierces Pass Road on the way back. There's a narrow path that provides a link between Walls Lookout and the Pierces Pass parking area, marking the beginning of one of several routes that descend from the cliff top to the Grose Valley below. From the car park, a gravel road leads back to the Walls Lookout picnic area.
