Standing centrally along the grand ridge separating the Buttermere and Ennerdale valleys, High Stile is the highest peak of the triad that includes Red Pike and High Crag. Its steep northern flanks drop precipitously toward Buttermere, carved into dramatic hollows by Grey Crags and Burtness Comb.

The true summit rests on a short spur extending just north of the main ridge line, marked by a small stone cairn. Contemporary Ordnance Survey mapping confirms this northern point holds the 807-metre high point, measuring precisely one metre taller than the cairn located on the main crest described by Alfred Wainwright.
