Great Knott forms a small intermediate rise on the high ridge connecting the grand architecture of Crinkle Crags with Cold Pike. Topographically, the peak acts like a bit of a chameleon depending on where you stand to study it. When looked at from the massive, higher crests of Crinkle Crags to the north, it seems like little more than an insignificant swelling in the turf of the ridge, easily overlooked as you tramped by toward the lower gaps.

However, drop down into the deep valleys or change your vantage point entirely to look across from Pike O'Blisco, and a completely different mountain face emerges. From the east, Great Knott proudly asserts its independent character, revealing itself as a tall, rugged, and distinctly defined rocky knoll that cuts a fine figure against the high skyline. This prominent definition ensures its inclusion as an independent summit on both the Nuttall and Birkett registers.

The true high point is marked by a modest, neatly piled stone cairn resting on a rough platform of glaciated bedrock. Taking a long breather by these stones rewards you with an exceptionally clear, striking view directly across the high pass to the majestic profile of Pike O'Blisco. Thanks to its position right in the centre of the upland link-up, the top serves as a brilliant balcony to study the surrounding landscape, providing a quiet sense of isolation between some of the most famous giants in the range.
