Looking Steads is one of the many rugged, minor tops scattered along the massive, undulating spine of the Glaramara ridge. If you are tracking along the high-altitude highway between Glaramara's main summit and the busy junction at Esk Hause, the terrain can become incredibly confusing. The ridge isn't a simple flat path; instead, it is a vast, fractured landscape of rocky knolls, sudden peat hags, and hidden depressions. Looking Steads stands proud as one of these intermediate bumps, offering a quiet, wild atmosphere well away from the main thoroughfares.

Because it possesses just enough independent altitude and topographical definition, it successfully gains a place on the official Nuttall and Birkett hill-bagging registers. For walkers who love exploring every nook and cranny of the high fells rather than simply marching straight from peak to peak, finding your way across the complex ground to seek out this subsidiary top makes for a highly rewarding navigational exercise, especially when the mountain mist begins to roll across the plateau.

A large rock crowns the top

Reaching the high ground reveals a highly characterful summit feature. Rather than a standard, loosely piled mound of gravel, the true top of Looking Steads is crowned by a magnificent, large erratic rock embedded directly into the earth. Standing on this natural stone platform unlocks an exceptional sense of isolation. Because the fell drops away dramatically to the east, stopping by this boulder treats you to a spectacular, plunge-line view straight down into the wild, lonely depths of the Langstrath valley winding its way far below.
