Looking Stead stands on the ridge leading to Pillar
Looking Stead
Rising along the elevated crest between Black Sail Pass and the main summit of Pillar, Looking Stead forms a distinct rocky intermediate top. Extending roughly a mile east of Pillar's main mass, this high shoulder holds 20 metres of topographic prominence, earning it an independent classification as a Nuttall peak.
Immediately east of the summit, the ground drops steeply to Black Sail Pass—a historic pedestrian route providing an ancient crossing point between upper Wasdale and the head of Ennerdale.
A cairn stands atop Looking Stead
The high point is marked by a neat stone cairn set on a rocky knoll directly along the ridge line. From its vantage position perched above the pass, the top yields striking perspectives looking directly into the deep troughs of Ennerdale and Mosedale.
