High House Tarn Top (centre) overshadowed by Allen Crags
High House Tarn Top
High House Tarn Top is one of the many rugged, minor summits that break up the long and highly complex Glaramara ridge. Tucked away on the high-level plateau between Glaramara's main peak and the high highway towards Esk Hause, it sits quietly in an area heavily defined by small, glinting pools and peat hags. While it is significantly overshadowed by the larger, stony mass of Allen Crags rising immediately beyond, the top has a beautifully wild character of its own, far removed from the busy thoroughfares of the lower valleys.
Though it appears as a relatively minor hummock on the landscape, it possesses just enough clear definition and independent drop to be classified on both the Nuttall and Birkett hill-bagging lists. Exploring this fractured stretch of rock-country requires a bit of concentration and careful footwork, rewarding walkers with a fantastic, intimate feel for the true upland wilderness that underpins the heart of the Southern Fells.
High House Tarn Top's summit
The true high point is marked by a prominent, weathered outcrop of bare bedrock rather than a traditional man-made stone cairn. Standing on this natural rock platform reveals an incredibly tranquil vantage point. Looking outward from these grey stone ribs unlocks a magnificent view across the undulating plateau, providing an authentic taste of high-altitude solitude and a brilliant look at the towering Lakeland giants flanking the horizon.
