Combe Head is a rugged, highly atmospheric summit nestled along the high ridge system of the Glaramara massif. For walkers planning a direct assault on Glaramara from the Borrowdale road—starting midway between Rosthwaite and Seatoller—the landscape presents some wonderful tactical choices. You can push up either of the ridges flanking the great scooped hollow of Combe Gill. Taking the eastern flank is widely considered the favourite route, as it allows you to cross the wilderness of Rosthwaite Fell and claim its rocky subsidiary top at Dovenest Top along the way.

Following this high-level circuit eventually leads you over two highly distinct, intermediate tops that sit proud of the main plateau: Combe Door Top and Combe Head. Both of these peaks carry official Nuttall status, making them highly prized detours for fell baggers. Making the effort to step onto these quieter, rocky platforms keeps you well away from the busier central tracks, offering a fantastic sense of scale as you transition across the high fells.

The summit of Combe Head is marked by a neat stone cairn perched right on the edge of the high ground. Standing by these stones reveals a truly spectacular drop-off, looking directly down into the yawning, crag-lined depths of Combe Gill's hanging valley below. Beyond the immediate drop, the view expands beautifully to carry your eye all the way down the green sweep of Borrowdale to the shimmering, calm waters of Derwentwater. It serves as a wonderful, dramatic final stepping stone before the short, final scramble up to Glaramara’s twin-peaked summit.
