Black Crag with Pillar beyond
Black Crag
Black Crag is a high, rocky shoulder extending eastwards from Scoat Fell towards Wind Gap. Positioned directly along the high-level ridge route connecting Scoat Fell to Pillar, it forms a prominent stepping stone above the scree slopes of Ennerdale and Mosedale.
Despite omitted from Alfred Wainwright's main 214 pictorial guides due to its close proximity to Scoat Fell, its 34 metres of re-ascent qualifies it as both a Hewitt and a Nuttall. The summit is marked by a modest stone cairn perched atop a rough outcrop of rock.

To the east, the ground drops steeply away into Wind Gap—a narrow, gale-swept col that separates Black Crag from the massive western flanks of Pillar. The northern face falls away abruptly into the deep recesses of Ennerdale, while the southern slopes descend toward Mosedale Beck.
