Bowfell - the North Top is to the left
Bowfell North Top
Bowfell North Top is a distinct, subsidiary summit of Bowfell, sitting just a short scramble north of the mountain's main, crowded crown. Because it is physically connected to the rest of the great massif, many walkers marching toward Ore Gap or Esk Pike step right past it without a second glance. However, it's a spot well worth pausing for; it shares all the rough high-altitude charm of its parent peak but wraps it in a much quieter, more secluded package.
A cairn marks the North Top of Bowfell
The top is heavily littered with fractured stone and features a neat, modest stone cairn pointing out the highest ground. Stopping here gives your knees a quick break from the steep work and unlocks a fantastic, alternative perspective. Because it projects out onto the northern shoulder, the view looks cleanly down over the sprawling high passes and directly faces the rugged profiles of Esk Pike and the Scafell chain, giving you a proper sense of being deep within the wildest rock-country of the Lakes.
