Staring down into the sheer, raw, and completely untouched wilderness of Kanangra-Boyd.
Beyond the classic escarpment towns lies the true, raw expanse of the Greater Blue Mountains wilderness. Stretching across the deep labyrinth of Wollemi, the labyrinthine pagoda formations of the Gardens of Stone, and the vertiginous, primitive drop-offs of Kanangra-Boyd, these outlying reserves hold some of the most untamed landscapes in the country.
Here, the hikes venture into deeply isolated territory. Paths traverse deep sandstone gaps to navigate completely unlit historic rail tunnels pulsing with glow worms, track dry slot canyon corridors that squeeze through sheer vertical fissures, or follow sweeping cliff lines out to remote rock formations looking down into colossal, forested gulfs.
Among the absolute standouts is the iconic Glow Worm Tunnel Track, charting an ancient mining line right into the dark heart of Wollemi. Nearby, the dry labyrinth paths of Wolgan View Canyon plunge between narrow sandstone walls, while the towering, weather-scoured spires of The Lost City present an architectural playground of natural stone towers. Further south, the colossal red ramparts of Kanangra Walls lead out toward Cottage Rock, serving up jaw-dropping vistas across one of the most rugged wilderness chasms in Australia.
