The Lower and Mid Blue Mountains serve as the incredible, heavily forested gateway to the range. Stretching from the rugged riverbanks of Glenbrook at the baseline up to the waterfall-laden high crests of Lawson, this elevation belt trades the raw windswept exposure of the upper clifftops for rich, sheltered microclimates and massive tree-fern valleys.
Every trail here showcases a unique aspect of mountain history and hydrology—whether climbing the hand-carved stone inclines of the old zig-zag rails, crossing stepping-stone creeks underneath ancient blue gums, or loop-tramping past cascading water curtains.
Among the standout highlights here is the classic South Lawson Waterfall Circuit, a peaceful, shaded valley track that loops past four beautiful cascades along a lush creek floor. For a deep plunge into historic rail infrastructure and dramatic gorge lookdowns, the trails surrounding the Knapsack Reserve and Mount Portal deliver incredible stone masonry and sweeping, bird's-eye views over the Nepean River.
