The Brecon Beacons

Rising like a colossal red wall above the Usk and Taff river valleys, the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) form one of the most dramatic and instantly recognizable mountain landscapes in Great Britain. Crafted from ancient Old Red Sandstone, the range features a striking dual personality: sheer, ice-carved escarpments facing north toward Mid Wales, and vast, heather-clad dip slopes melting south toward the industrial valleys.

Spanning 23 official 2,000ft summits, the massif is anchored by the high, flat-topped crown of Pen y Fan (886m)—the highest peak in Britain south of Cadair Idris. Whether traversing the exposed high plateaus between the Carmarthenshire border and the Black Mountains or taking in the serene glacial waters of Llyn y Fan Fach, these mountains blend rugged wilderness with timeless upland scale.
