North Pennines (Western Fells)

The Western Fells of the North Pennines form a vast, high-altitude upland shelf that dominates the skyline above eastern Cumbria and the Eden Valley. Stretching across an immense swath of northern England, this wild and windswept massif contains 24 official 2,000ft summits, headlined by Cross Fell (893m)—the highest point in England outside the Lake District. Swept by the famous Helm Wind, Europe's only named wind, this high country represents one of the most wild and isolated upland areas anywhere in the country.

Unlike the rocky, deeply carved peaks of the nearby Cumbrian fells, the Western Pennines are defined by colossal gritstone terraces, expansive peat-plateaus, and dramatic western escarpments that fall away abruptly toward the valley floor below. Bounded by the Eden Valley to the west and the sweeping moorland watersheds of Teesdale to the east, the high interior remains wonderfully remote. Hidden along its edges are geological wonders like the limestone chasm of High Cup Nick and the dramatic radar dome atop Great Dun Fell, offering legendary, open-horizon hillwalking across Northern England.
