Standing as the indisputable crown of the Cambrian Mountains, Pumlumon is the highest massif in Mid Wales, reaching 752 metres at the summit cairn of Pen Pumlumon Fawr. Derived from the Welsh meaning 'Five Peaks', the broad, undulating plateaus and moorland ridgelines of Pumlumon harbor a wilderness of immense hydrological importance: from these desolate heights spring three great rivers—the Severn, the Wye, and the Rheidol.
To walk the high summits of Plynlimon is to experience true Welsh solitude. Tucked into the crags beneath its northern cliffs lies the dark glacial tarn of Llyn Llygad Rheidol, while expansive vistas from the main ridgeline sweep uninterrupted from the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) in the north down across Cardigan Bay and into the distant Brecon Beacons.
