Rising above the southern edge of the famous reservoir estate, the high moorlands of the Elan Valley harbour some of the wilder and most desolate 2,000ft terrain in Mid Wales. While the lower valley is renowned for its Victorian masonry dams and pine-fringed shorelines, the high plateau south of Claerwen and Caban Coch offers vast, trackless wilderness walking.
The crown of this high plateau is Drygarn Fawr (645m), famous for the pair of massive, beehive-shaped stone cairns standing sentinel at its summit. Joined across the boggy pass of Bwlch y Ddau Faen by Gorllwyn (613m), these two summits form the complete set of official 2,000ft Nuttalls within the Elan Valley region.
