Forming the eastern gateway to Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons National Park), The Black Mountains (Y Mynydd Du) comprise an expansive group of long, sandstone ridges extending like fingers across the borderlands of Powys and Monmouthshire. Carved by deep, secluded valleys such as the Vale of Ewyas and Grwyne Fawr, these Old Red Sandstone heights offer some of the finest high-altitude ridge walking in South Wales.
Crowned by the high, peat-covered dome of Waun Fach (811m), the range contains 12 official 2,000ft Nuttall summits. From the classic skyline circuit of Pen Allt-mawr and Pen Cerrig-calch above Crickhowell to the border-straddling heights of Black Mountain along the Offa's Dyke Path, the Black Mountains deliver sweeping views, historic ruins like Llanthony Priory, and exceptional mountain solitude.
